ABOUT 'SEASONS'

Brisbane floral still life painters, Kate Quinn & Emily Day have joined forces to present SEASONS at Latrobe Art Space, Paddington QLD; a beautiful collection of vibrant floral works in oils and acrylics.

SEASONS is an immersive experience through summer, autumn, winter and spring. Four sections of the gallery will showcase a collection of paintings, ceramics and candles, all carefully created to represent the season using flora, fauna, fruit, and colour. The same arrangements have been captured by both Kate and Emily, yet are depicted in their own painterly style and interpretation, to hang side by side.

Their paintings will be accompanied by stunning hand built vases by South Australian based artist & ceramicist Pia Kuykhoven and hand painted seedpod installations by Toowoomba artist Chelsea Gruss Baker, also known as Hello Chelsart. In addition, two unique scents have been chosen to represent the Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice, in the form of hand-poured soy candles, with Kate & Emily's designs on the packaging, made right here in Queensland using upcycled wine bottles by Unwined Candle co.

Events throughout the week will also offer a rich, immersive viewer experience.

Kate and Emily have both worked extensively together over the last year, with their joint bespoke workshops in beautiful locations around Australia, Bloom Art Experiences. They are both very passionate about the joy that viewing (and of course creating) art can spark and are thrilled to be collaborating together again, by curating and running this show, down the road from where they live and work.

Stay tuned for more information and progress images via Instagram at @katequinnart and @e_milydaystudio.

Kate & Emily look forward to walking you through the Seasons.

Seasons: July 11-16 at Latrobe Art Space, Paddington QLD.

All work displayed will be available for purchase in-person and online.

KATE QUINN

Photo 19-7-2022, 3 16 59 am.jpg

I am an artist, former social worker and mother of three teenagers, and I live in Brisbane, just down the road from my business partner, colleague and friend, Emily. I paint full time from my tiny but abundant home studio.

I paint still life (and now and then, pets) using oils on canvas, and I adore painting flowers, foliage, ceramics, vessels, textiles and fruit. I don't think I'll ever get sick of painting still life compositions! I adore any hue of pink, blue and green, and these colours feature in some combination in almost all of my work.

I exhibit my art in regional and city galleries and stores all over Australia, and my art career breakthrough moment came from the regional town of Orange, NSW, when I won the 'Jumbled Art Superstar' competition a few years ago. In the past two years I have been lucky enough to have two solo exhibitions, in Queensland and NSW, and I am thrilled to be collaborating with Emily on this exciting creative venture, Seasons. I am so looking forward to meeting art-loving people who visit the exhibition and watching them enjoy the immersive art experience we have prepared.

EMILY DAY

Photo 19-7-2022, 3 42 24 am.jpg

I am a self-taught artist based in inner-city Brisbane, where I live with my husband, our very energetic toddler (+ baby on the way) and our less energetic 11 year old rescue dog. After working as a full time artist since 2019, I finally have my own studio space, which is a very welcome break from previously working on the dining room table!

I predominantly use acrylics to paint floral scenes, still life arrangements and the occasional landscape. Broadly, my work aims to capture and celebrate the ‘aliveness’ of a moment in time: to encourage both myself as the artist, and you as the viewer, to be completely grounded in the present.

I find the whole process of completing a painting very meditative, from gathering inspiration, sketching compositions, mixing beautiful colours and slowly layering loose brushstrokes until I think a piece is done. I am so inspired by the cyclical and transient nature of florals, so I am very thrilled to be showcasing SEASONS alongside my wonderful friend Kate. We both love connecting with our collectors so it is such a joy to be hosting our own show, down the road from where we both live. We can't wait to welcome you through the doors!

PIA KUYKHOVEN

I am a contemporary floral artist and ceramicist, residing in Adelaide with my husband, children, and dogs. I was born and raised in Adelaide and have spent time living abroad. I currently work in my studio, situated in my backyard garden, in the Southern Suburbs of Adelaide.

I returned to my creative practice following on from a successful career as a landscaper designer, fusing together my love for flowers and extensive plant knowledge. I hand build individual, unique ceramic vases and platters. I am constantly inspired by the endless possibilities and versatility that ceramics have to offer. Inspired by my childhood memories of my Great Aunt’s cottage garden, I endeavour to evoke feelings of nostalgia and memory with the floral designs that I paint onto the ceramic pieces.

I currently sell my work nationally across Australia, and internationally, as well as online. I have recently completed my first solo exhibition, and am looking forward to showcasing my ceramic work alongside Kate & Emily's paintings for SEASONS.

My name is Chelsea, and I’m the Toowoomba based artist behind Hello Chelsart. I am devoted to collecting, preparing and transforming Australian Flora, mainly Seedpods, into unique works of art.

Seedpods are collected and sourced sustainably from all across Australia, and through my art practice, I breathe new life into them, giving them a ‘second bloom’ by transforming them into unique and vibrant works of art.

I am looking forward to showcasing my hand painted seedpods alongside Kate & Emily's paintings and Pia's ceramics for this SEASONS exhibition!

UNWINED CANDLE CO.

Our names are Trudy & Mark and our Mackay based business, Unwined Candle co. created their first Wine Bottle Candle in 2010, with a desire to have a positive impact on the environment.

As candle lovers we felt a responsibility to challenge the process of discarding a vessel which would inevitably end up in landfill. Billions of new glass vessels are being made yearly as we continue to repeat the same unnecessary process.

Unfortunately, most wine bottles are used once, opened and discarded the same day. Glass is such a diverse and resilient product taking over 1 million years to decompose meaning it can be reused and redesigned many many times.

We have paired up with Kate & Emily to provide two of our signature scent candles, with their artwork featuring on the packaging, for their SEASONS exhibition.
